Tips for Gardening Success!

Never stop researching.

When researching, it’s important to try and use serval sources rather than just sticking to one. I have found wildly different information about the same plants. When it comes to gardening, there is nothing really set in stone. Something that grows well for the author of the article may not grow well for you. You have to consider local soil structure, climate, and shading. No two gardens are the same. You should not think that all the techniques that should work will work. It’s best to get more than one opinion and to build your own. Only you will fully understand what works in your garden.

Importance of Note Taking.

Note-taking is one of the keys to growing your gardening knowledge throughout the years. This is especially useful for writing down planting and harvest dates for vegetables. Knowing when you planted and how well the plants did will help inform your choices and planting schedule for next season. Some of the best data you can use for your garden is from your own experience and the garden itself. Knowing what you’ve planted and where will help you with crop rotation and give you a better grasp of the fertility of your garden. Giving you more information to adjust for next season.

Don’t be afraid to experiment.

Experimentation is one of the greatest tools a gardener has in their belt. It’s the only real way to truly figure out what will work best for you and your garden. This is one of the excuses I use to always buy extra seeds! It can also be incredibly useful for vegetable gardening. Start seeds at different times, use different soil mixes and different fertilizers, and see what works and what doesn’t. Small changes can lead to a big impact on your plant’s success. Remember to write down what you did; keeping track of the experiment is half the work.

Failure leads to success.

Your plants will die, you will experience some struggle, and the weather will work against you. However, the more you fail, the more you learn what not to do. You will learn about preventative measures and how to work with the weather. Failure is only true if you learn nothing from it and repeat the same mistakes. Figure out what went wrong and how you can prevent it next season. There are some things you may not be able to overcome, but there are always different plants and techniques you can use to bring success to your garden.
